[Music] Mariel Buckley - Strange Trip Ahead - Upcoming album

Just the other day I was wondering when Mariel Buckley will come out with something new. Looks like she has an album, titled Strange Trip Ahead, that'll be released in October!

Two tracks are up on Bandcamp already, and if this is the vibe for the whole album, then I'm really looking forward to it. It's consistent with her usual style, but new material.

Her sound is unpolished rough-at-the-edges country; it reminds me of the stuff from the '90s and earlier that I grew up with, except also with a vaguely gay vibe. Very nostalgic without actually being from the period.

Twitter was such a Place, I swear...

Bowser/Luigi AU where Luigi's committed whatever crimes and offenses are necessary for a Mario fandom twitter user to unironically write "DNI if you ship Peach with Luigi or Bowser" in their bio.

(I know it was meant to be a "defend my OTP against the icky yucky multishippers" kind of thing but. It was still really funny to wonder wtf Luigi did to Peach to be written up there with BOWSER 😂)

So it would probably be something stupid, like maybe he ate the last of the ice cream that Peach was saving to eat after the bulk of her workday. Or maybe they were racing and he knocked her off the track at the last minute with a red shell. Or maybe he accidentally smacked her while gestulating with his hands while talking one time XD

I "finished" Fields of Mistria

Got the last of the 8-heart cutscenes! So now I've bonded with all the date-able NPCs! Here are some brief thoughts on the last three I needed:

Boyfriend Rhys )

Best Friend Valen )

Best Friend Hayden )

I think my favorite 8-heart cutscenes are...Rhys, Adeline, and March (I really regret not dating Adeline, btw). There will be 10-heart cutscenes in the full release of the game, so whoever's personal stories didn't really get spotlighted will be spotlighted there, I hope! And to everyone else who's cross-heart event goals were accomplished in their 8-heart cutscenes, I'm curious as to what their 10-heart cutscenes will be like. Especially for the best friend tracks; the romance tracks have to obviously steer you into maybe proposing, after all.

I hope they'll add some heart cutscenes to some of the NPCs, too. I don't remember if Stardew Valley has them, but regardless the lack of them here makes things seem quite lopsided. I wanna hand out with Elsie and Terithia! They're so cool!

Assorted Final Thoughts )

I''m a little bit tired of the game now, lol. 48 hours is a lot of hours! I left off on Winter 1, so i might put it down for a while until the full game is out (2026?) Would super recommend this game if you like farming sims (or whatever this genre is) though. Despite my minor complaints, its a very lively experience, even still in early access~

Here's a random unordered list of things I like about the game, if you need more convincing, hehe~
List of random positives! )

Air quality this weekend was, to quote The Weather Channel, "Atrocious and unsafe". Wow. (It's smoke blowing in from Saskatchewan.) Anyway, I stayed inside for my stat holiday today, which is not how I wanted things to go.

Stuff that I did this past weekend:
+ Went to a coworker's birthday party
+ Went for a coffee meetup organized by the local pride group
+ Did some reading (but not as much as I'd have liked)
+ Hauled out my watercolours and did some paintings
+ Brainstormed some fic concepts (that I don't have time for at the moment but maybe at some future point), specifically some NL/DK/NO and also some NL/NO, the latter will probably require research but we'll see.
+ Had planned to do some writing for IIBB but found myself exhausted. So. That will have to be... later. (I'm in the "I hate this fic" editing stage.)

Watercolour stuff )

07.27.25 - 08.02.25

SUNDAY

The last day of DC-Slash Con! My main goal was to attend the Vid Review panel, because I wanted to see the type of feedback vidders get, and thus what’s important in making a vid. It was all very informative! Not only for the aforementioned, but I also learned that one of the sources, Unbelievable Space Love, is 9 minutes long and available for free on Youtube. And that source that had the spies doing awesome action scenes (I think Shah Rukh Khan is a character or actor?) is some kind of Bollywood movie universe, or something. I’ll have to verify the details later. And then yes, Thunderbolt Fantasy really is all puppets. Which is super hecking cool.

So overall, DC-Slash con was a lot of fun! I’m excited for next year!!!

In the meantime, I finally got around to cleaning my room a little, and playing some more Fields of Mistria. Got 2 more 8-heart events under my belt!

MONDAY

I worked on my website! Made a skeleton of the structure and learned about relative links. I'm going to have to combine the CSS files I have of my two templates together, and also figure out how mail merging works to make compiling the masterlist of my fic easier, lol.

I also worked on filling out some ship templates for the Royal Plumbing Polycule, since its just past the anniversary of me posting the first fic in the series. Couldn't decide which template, so I'm filling all 3 for now. And I'll have to redraw my old relationship graph, too~

I also went back and listened to some of the songs from Saturday’s Vid Show again. Salute by Little Mix is a fun enough song. But it's also like “heck yeah, let's theme our Girl Power anthem around military-esque music and language for reasons we refuse to examine! Wahoo!” You know?

TUESDAY

I realized, with my new and improved hair washing and styling workflow, I am now That Bitch that takes literally an hour to take a shower. I should count myself lucky that I don't have roommates anymore to bother with this. (Well, there’s my brother. But in college I roomed with 5 people so that would have been worse.) The extra time was worth it though. It's been like a week since I styled my hair, and I've forgotten how cute it looked when I did~

Kept working on the website. I wanted to combine the CSS of the alphabet-soup template with the CSS of the fic masterlist template. After fighting with it all evening, I finally reached a compromise that I’m happy with! All there’s left to do now is 1) consolidate the root variables 2) adjust the colors for the dark/light modes, and 3) move on to testing the alphabet-soup fic reading template, which should go way smoother because I won't have to adjust any CSS files hardly at all! I also wanna maybe figure out how to get the footer text from the masterlist CSS onto the other pages, because I really like it!

WEDNESDAY

I was thinking of leaving the office at noon to avoid the heat but it turns out noon is one of the hottest parts of the day, go figure. Actually, it was a little cooler at 5pm, even! So it worked out!

…And it turns out while I was gone Dad drove up, and he and my brother had gone to the mythical tax-free land of New Hampshire to buy a TV and TV stand before the tariffs hit. Unexpected, but certainly welcome!

Spent all evening working on my Royal Plumbing Polycule ship charts. Figured out rather quickly that Google Drawings was the best, easiest to use, and most accessible tool I had for this (GIMP, the first option I’d thought of, was too confusing). I spent most of my time setting up one chart, but now that I had them all as documents and all the colors chosen and decided on the formatting, the rest should be smooth sailing. In fact, I got about 80% of the way done by the time bedtime rolled around!

THURSDAY

My brother spent the day assembling the TV stand (he put the back on backwards, but it’s okay!), and after work I set up the TV. Apparently both my parents had insisted to my brother that we don't use our email addresses for it, so I made up a whole new one, haha. It’s a Google TV, after all.

But it’s working great! My brother found a streaming service that was playing a big block of The Super Mario Bros Super Show, somehow. I’m interested to see if that programming block is a 24/7 thing, tomorrow. I’d love to start my mornings watching that…

I finished the ship charts! Shout out to this SVG to PNG converter for coming in clutch; the text would have been all blurry, otherwise!

FRIDAY

Messed with the TV some more. It turns out that yes, there is a channel just for playing the Super Mario Bros Super Show. I also installed S0undTV and SmartTubeNext! So hopefully no ads~!

And actually you know what I'm still not done about the Mareach friendship thing. It's crazy how many baseline assumptions people have about the series that causes them to say whatever. “Mario rescues Peach, which implies a romantic link” this, “Mario's been rescuing Peach for 40 years” that. Honestly.

Went home to do laundry, and watched some WNBA games on my parents’ TV! The LA vs Seattle one went into double overtime!!! Apparently triple overtime was an option, which is crazy.

SATURDAY

I was looking for stuff to watch on TV this morning and found How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? It's an anime where a bunch of schoolgirls are trying to lose weight/tone up, so they all are at the same gym to do so. Of course, all of them are skinny as twigs. Except for the muscle guy, I suppose. But anyway, obviously not worth watching, lmao. I landed on Xena: Warrior Princess, instead, as my background noise while waiting for breakfast. Even with the little I saw, I could see that it's a solid show! I really liked the physical effects and stuff, haha.

Also Season 5 Bubble Guppies episodes are listed as Season 1 and that pains me so much. And then later in the day I find out that Amazon Prime lists the Super Mario Bros Super Show episodes in the complete wrong order. So that's also fun!

Dabbled in some of my game backlog; I started with Cassette Beasts! Played through the first little tutorial section, and it didn't really hook me like I'd hoped. It also is one of many games that decides it wants to be a little scary by using glitching effects to represent breaks in reality. I swear every cute-ish game has that shit now…Regardless, I really wanna try again at some point because I'd wanted to play the game after hearing how non-amatonormative it is, haha. I also played Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure. It's a puzzle game. Everything was going fine, until I got stuck on a puzzle in the first area after the tutorial world. And no, there's no hint system or anything. So, you know. I turned the game off XD

Spent the evening watching a pickleball tournament match, and then Women's 3x3 basketball. Because apparently 3x3 basketball has an international competitive tournament structure — rules, referees and all. And everyone else knew about it but me.

I had to get up at 5:45 AM in order to make an important phone call to Deal With A Thing.

I think I deserve a gold star for Getting Things Done.

(The Thing is not actually dealt with; I had to send in some documentation. Which means that at some point I'm going to have to get up at 5:45 AM again to make another phone call.)

You know, this kind of nonsense is not something I ever expected to encounter in life. Ah, well.

Day whatever-the-hell of the Mareach Incident

I saw a really good post [X] criticizing the response of the shippers in all this and it made me realize something. 'Cause in the post they say that Mareach is "99% crumbs and vibes" and like — I'd complained a few months ago [X] [X] about a picture compilation of Mareach Moments(tm) that included two quite shitty Word of God quotes, and I'd wondered why the shippers were willing to proudly hold up such garbage when surely they had better material to work with? But what if they didn't, actually? What if they were just as, if not only marginally less, starved for content as the rest of us? It would certainly explain those quotes; that's all they have to work with! I almost feel bad, but I don't — I have this incredibly uncharitable working theory that the Mareach shippers really like acting oppressed or something like that despite being one of the biggest ships in the fandom. Example: the referenced reaction to the official statement about Mario and Peach being "really good friends". But maybe that's rarepair ship energy being applied to a (formerly) pseudo-canon ship, and thus a larger scale? Its a similar set of insecurities, I feel, so maybe...🤔

In other news, I just about half-understand that follower I got a few weeks ago that had "DNI if you ship Bowuigi" in their bio; I was literally scrolling through my dash and saw some untagged Mareach and was like "I should just block eveyone who ships Mareach" completely unironically. Its only a half-understanding, though, because I'm not about to advertise that im piss-awful at vetting people and/or the type of person to push the responsibility of curating my own space onto others, and also Mareach operates on a different level than Bowuigi does. More widespread and normalized, imo.

Also, new annoyance unlocked: when people were reacting to the news they were saying things like "there's no way they don't have feelings for each other after 40 years of Mario rescuing Peach!" Which first of all, holy heteronormativity Batman, and second of all why the hell are we treating the Mario canon as a linear timeline that happens in real time? Are you fucking stupid? Hello?????

Weekly Blog: 07.20.25 - 07.26.25

SUNDAY
I was scrolling through Tumblr this morning and I came across someone who announced their intention to ship Bowser and Bowser Jr. All I can say is godspeed, friend. o7 Stay strong and don't let anyone take your joys from you…! (Their blog proudly states that their a fan of incest ships, so they'll probably be alright, hehe)

Made a foray into using the ao3downloader to get the html files of all my fics for my site. Had a bit of trouble, but this GitHub post solved my issue. This program is really neat! Worked like a charm~

Last night I found a Murderbot Diaries fic where the narrative is told via you playing a game of Minesweeper. It’s really cool. The code also goes nuts, lmao (I peeked at it to see all the different endings).

Also I finally finished cleaning up my Dreamwidth blog!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Everything I want to be up here is posted here now! So now I can turn my attention to Phase 2 of this project: Making my Neocities website.

…After I play my fill of Fields of Mistria. The new update is tomorrow! 😀

MONDAY - TUESDAY
Fields of Mistria update dropped! It’s fun to get back into the game~ You can date people now! Multiple people! Apparently! (I haven’t gotten there yet)

Played it through Tuesday, although on that day I got like a bunch of messages from people I know in a bunch of different channels. A high school friend on Discord, a mutual on Tumblr, a former coworker on LinkedIn, someone I'd been chatting with late last year on Pillowfort. Nothing bad; it was just a bit overwhelming ^^;

I also took a break to go shopping today because our water's being shut off tomorrow morning/afternoon so I wanted to make sure water was in the house for the duration. I also bought snacks :D

WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY
On Wednesday Dad came with a couch! We’ve been trying to convert the spare room to a living room (because my brother claimed the living room as a bedroom, and we’re finally getting started on that process. The couch can convert into a relatively firm bed, just in case we ever have guests.

I also went out to sing at an event with some other a cappella folks. It was fun! We got ramen after~

And then I played more Fields of Mistria into Thursday. I wanna try to complete Year 2 before putting it down again.

FRIDAY
Apparently Nintendo officially declared that Princess Peach and Mario are “good friends”. Platonic Mareach FTW!!!!! Everyone else is super crashing out about it tho 🤭 (Everyone loves the power of friendship until it interferes with a ship they like, lol) (also by god the casual misogyny about it all! Yikes!)

DC-Slash Con starts today! It's not about DC comics; it’s ‘cause the con originally was tied to Washington DC. I’m glad that cleared up for me, because otherwise I wouldn't have thought to go XD. There are lots of good panels! I especially enjoyed the Building Inclusive Fandom one.

SATURDAY
More DC-Slash Con! I’d meant to blitz the creation of pages for my website, but ended up distracted by the con, haha.

There was a panel about vidding and now I wanna get into vidding but i dont have anything to vid! Mario cutscenes? Probably not that viable! Weh! Maybe if it was a very short vid…

Also during the meal break they streamed the first 2 episodes of the Murderbot TV show in the Discord and I had to check it out. People weren't wrong in saying its fanfic of the books. They handled the inner monologues and the awkwardness very well, though!. Makes me wanna reread the first book again. And apparently in the Discord someone shared a link to their treasure trove of a bunch of TV show rips. One of those was Murderbot. Another was Ted Lasso, which is a show I want to watch sometime. I have both on my hard drive now 🙂

They had Buddy Daddies playing in one of the con rooms and I watched a little of that, too. Couldn't get into it, though. A shame, ‘cause that was another show that was on my watch list. But the character dynamic of the main leads (to start off, anyway) isn't very compelling to me. I didn’t like it 🙁

The Vid Show was AMAZING! There was an Ace attorney vid set to I’m Blue that was fun. Also there was a Thunderbolt Fantasy vid that was intriguing! It had puppets and 3d animation and 2d sprites and LEGO and is this all the same source??? And the action scenes were super cool, too…! There was also a vid about Ted Lasso that made me really wanna watch the show more than I already did. And there was a multifandom vid starring a whole bunch of F/F couples, and hopefully the vid will be released somewhere because I’m super curious about the Black couple that kept being shown and the fandoms list scrolled too fast to clock it. 🙁 Also there was a vid about New Life Begins and another about a universe of Bollywood spies(?) that looked really cool as well. One of the vids had Frog and Toad in it and another was like a minute long so truly you can vid anything if you try hard enough…🤔 Vids are cool and I’m adding vidding to my ever-growing list of hobbies I don't have time for.

The Fields of Mistria Update

I've been playing the game again, 'cause the new update added a bunch of stuff. One of those things is dating, and with it, the bachelors and bachelorettes have 8-heart cutscenes! Got to dive into that aspect of the game last week. Assorted thoughts about each of the cutscenes I've seen so far:

Best Friend Celine )

Best Friend Caldarus )

Boyfriend Balor )

Best Friend Adeline )

Best Friend Eiland )

Girlfriend Reina )

Best Friend March )

Best Friend Juniper )

Final Thoughts )

I've got Hayden, Valen, and Rhys left! Of them, Rhys is the one I'm planning to date. We'll see how that goes! Also there's a mechanic where you go on weekend dates with your romance partners (one at a time) but I'm waiting until I get everyone eligible to 8-hearts before I venture into that.

[Music] Sabaton: "Legends" (upcoming)

Sabaton has announced a new album, Legends, due to be released in October. This is a different turn from their more recent WWI-themed albums; Legends reaches back further in time, exploring "legendary" figures from various periods in history, from the ancient world to the Napoleonic Wars. Four of the songs are already up on their Bandcamp.

For a while now I've hoped that they would tackle some earlier historical subjects - I did like the WWI stuff, but it's a pretty big world out there. So I'm excited that this new album is going to have more variety.

Some of the subjects are obvious based on song title, but others not so much; luckily for us the subject is listed under the lyric pages for each song on Sabaton's website (here)
Track list )
