Recent things

+ Posted the fic I've been agonizing over for ages, hooray. Writing that was like pulling teeth but it seems to have actually turned out rather well.

+ Today was Race Day. I participated in the 3k; didn't actually run, but speedwalking. It was fun, but I am very exhausted. Might walk the 5k next year; we'll see. Or maybe I'll do 3k again but actually try to jog bost of it.

+ Skipped out on judo all week because of a headcold.

+ I've been trying to make some attempts to talk to people in fandom a little more. It's super hard, though. I feel like there are fewer opportunities for casual interaction than there used to be. Or maybe I'm just disappointed that so many people I used to know have moved on, and also frustrated by the current platforms (I miss when journal format was primary, that worked really well for me). ...Anyway, I'm taking what opportunities do come up, at least, trying to think of conversation topics and so on. And come to think of it, maybe I should use this as motivation to finish and post more fics - people tend to be more talkative when I'm more visible.

+ Received two PMs on tumblr from people looking for someone to roleplay with. I was kind of surprised - one of them was from somebody I've never interacted with, and this kind of cold-calling is a totally different approach from how it was done back when I actually played. Anyway, I actually do miss roleplaying a lot, but the thought of doing it anywhere other than Dreamwidth feels kind of weird. (And now I am reminded of all the old threads that will never be finished because my partners dropped off the face of the internet).

+ The past few weekends have been so busy and I'm honestly pretty cranky that I haven't had time to do any more paintings. I swear next week I will work on the two that I've already started. e_e

+ Vaguely contemplating a trip to Charlottetown next year, probably around September. I've been to PEI before, but not Charlottetown, so it'll be nice to go somewhere completely new. Kind of thinking about combining with a trip to Halifax too - it's been ages since I was last in Nova Scotia. Anyway, we'll see. Meanwhile, I'm starting to really look forward to my trip to Edmonton in November.

Fic: Floor Time with Fran (for just a few moments)

Floor Time with Fran (for just a few moments)
Today was supposed to be just another exhausting but satisfying workday for Franziska. Instead, she had been surrounded by more fools than usual, all because she may or may not be sick.
So what if she was? She still had a job to do, and it wasn't like she was going to sink into the floor and die. So she definitely doesn't need nor want to go home. Not even if it's warmer there than here. Not at all.

Fandom: Ace Attorney
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Franziska von Karma, Maya Fey, Dick Gumshoe
Relationships: Franziska von Karma/Maya Fey
Additional Tags: Sickfic, Humor, Established Relationship
Length: 1,909 words

Here's the fic! )

Wrote this for Wendy’s birthday!!! More Franmaya sickfic is one of the things they ask for, so I decided to take a crack at it!

Commentary )

Anyway I have a sleep debt to catch up on, because I lost. So much sleep trying to get this done, lmao. But that’s my own fault; I’d had two and a half weeks and faffed about for one week of that ^^; But I did it, in the end! My first Ace Attorney fic! 😁

(no subject)

Sometimes I'm not satisfied with the way something came out, but then somebody comments positively on it. And then I realize, oh - I feel about it the way I do because I made it. (This happened today.)

Like, there was a vision in my head of how I wanted the thing to be, and then the result isn't what I had hoped, and that's frustrating and disappointing. But somebody reading it (or looking at it in the case of visual art) won't know about all that, because they didn't make it! They can't see inside my head! Whooooa! And if somebody else made this thing, I'd probably think it was all right. (Maybe not super duper amazing, but all right, and sometimes that's all you want!)

I think also, partly, I get very self-conscious when posting something that's the fic equivalent of rent-lowering gunshots. Like, I put upon myself this expectation that if I write something that a lot of people aren't into, I need to make it extra awesome to make up for that. But, nah. I can write whatever! And it doesn't have to be amazing! It can just be a thing! It doesn't matter!

It's always nice to have little moments of clarity like this.

The local library's reading challenge

The local library is doing an "Exploring Horror Subgenres" challenge. The idea is to try out various different types of horror, read one from each category, maybe give something new a shot, etc. They have a list of recommended reading (you can also pick stuff for the challenge that isn't on their list, though).

Here's the library's recommended list (plus notes on what I've read):
Cut for length )
For books not on the list, I'm planning on reading these two:

Slasher: My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones. I really enjoyed The Buffalo Hunter Hunter and have been meaning to read more of this guy's work.

Sci-Fi horror: Authority by Jeff VanderMeer. I've already read Annihilation, and enjoyed it enough to put the sequel on the to-read list, soooo I guess there's no time like the present. :V

Anyway! Has anyone read any of these? Thoughts etc? I find with a lot of horror the premise sounds interesting but the execution doesn't live up to my hopes. Which goes for movies too, I suppose.

Pancake adventures

Scenario: I kept having cravings for pancakes.

Problem: I am terrible at making pancakes and going out for pancakes would be very expensive.

Details: When I first moved into my condo, I kept looking up recipes to make pancakes at home. But no matter how I fiddled with the ratios to adjust the recipe to make pancakes for 1 person, it still ended up with way too much batter. So, I would end up with too many pancakes, which I then cooked poorly because I wasn't practiced at it, and some of the batter in the bin because I couldn't possibly use all of it, and I would feel very frustrated and annoyed and wasteful instead of happy because I was enjoying delicious pancakes.

Solution: I remembered that pancake mix Is A Thing and picked some up at ye olde grocery store.

I feel very silly.

(But in my defense, we almost never had pancakes at home when I was a kid! This is a very 'special occasion, have when you're out of town' kind of breakfast!)

1/4 cup mix, plus at least 1/4 cup water depending on what else I'm mixing into the batter = enough for one person. Who'd've thunk. Amazing. Also, butter in the pan instead of oil works better for this, at least for my pans.

I still suck at pouring them and flipping them and getting them into the pan in a way that will look nice, but I only burnt something the first time and now (after a few weekends of Saturday pancakes) they come out quite tasty.

So far I've tried making banana pancakes (delicious, but require a lot of water), blueberry pancakes (delicious, but the berries turned the pancakes a weird shade of blue), and pumpkin spice pancakes (delicious, but needs more spice mix than what I used this time around).

I will never need to go out for pancakes ever thanks to a $4.50 box from the local shops. Hooray.
